Gardian

Our Gardian of the Month is Bonnifer Ballard, Chief Executive Officer for the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

EG: If you could learn one skill instantly, what would it be? Why?

BB: Personally, I’d like to learn wood working. I’ve tried my hand at simple things – a bench, an Adirondack chair, even a night stand (which turned out terrible but I’m using it on principle). I can’t seem to get the hang of mitered corners or drawers or frankly anything that takes skill. I’d love to be able to make beautiful things out of wood. Things made with wood have warmth and life. They just make a space feel so inviting.

Professionally, I’d like to learn another language. I took French in high school and was fluent, but I lost that skill years ago from non-use. I can still read a little and have picked up some Spanish slang but I’d love to be able to have a conversation with someone in a language other than English, or to translate materials I use at work for my non native English speaking members.

EG: What is your go-to question or topic when networking with new people?

BB: I like people and am naturally curious, but getting started is always hard and feels awkward. I will usually use something in the environment to start off with – yes, the weather, but also food, décor of a room, what someone is wearing if I think it’s super cute or interesting, a smart question someone asked during a training session. Everyone likes a tasteful compliment. Once I get that ice breaker comment out of the way, I introduce myself and they introduce themselves, and that usually gets the ball rolling.

EG: What is something you most enjoy teaching others?

BB: My master’s degree is in leadership development. It is a passion of mine. I really love sharing what I know or have read, and I nearly always learn something in return. I believe we’re obligated to use our successes to help others rise, particularly those facing barriers. And I really want to see better leaders in the world.

EG:  If you could have an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose and why?

BB: That’s tough since I love to travel. A trip around the world? Seriously, if I had to choose a single destination, I would choose Greece. Beaches and good food are two of my favorite things.

EG: What is a resource that has been valuable to you in your work, and what makes you appreciate it?
