Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) work is always evolving, shaped by changing social, political, and workplace dynamics. At Event Garde, our commitment to DEIB remains steadfast, even as external challenges grow. As pushback against DEIB efforts increases in some spaces, our Director of DEIB, Krista Rowe, and I have been reflecting on sustainable strategies that can help organizations adapt and thrive. Now more than ever, it’s essential to stay flexible, creative, and courageous. Success lies in fostering a culture of belonging while continuously refining approaches to meet new challenges.

We’ll be sharing more insights during our upcoming webinar,  but here are some key takeaways from our discussions so far.

The Power of Language

Words matter. How we talk about DEIB can either foster trust or fuel resistance. Grounding conversations in shared values—like fairness, respect, and belonging—can create stronger connections and reduce pushback. It’s important to test and refine language based on your audience and their readiness while staying true to core DEIB principles. Small shifts in messaging can open doors to deeper engagement. The key? Find what resonates and use it consistently.

Keeping DEIB Embedded in Daily Work

DEIB isn’t an add-on—it must be woven into the fabric of everyday operations. That means integrating it into hiring, decision-making, team culture, and mentorship programs. Despite evolving legal landscapes, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and DEIB trainings remain viable as long as they’re inclusive. Data is also a powerful tool—use it to showcase impact and secure leadership buy-in.

It’s not just about the doing; it’s about communicating the wins to secure leadership support. Positioning DEIB as an essential part of the work—rather than just a “nice-to-have”—can make the case even stronger.

Staying Resilient for the Long Haul

DEIB work can be emotionally draining, so self-care and community are crucial. On an individual level, it’s important to set boundaries, check in with yourself, and find practices that keep you grounded so you can keep doing the work. Organizationally, resilience means staying committed by avoiding knee-jerk reactions to external pressures. Adaptability is key—maintain DEIB as a core priority while adjusting strategies as needed. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

The future of DEIB depends on courage, creativity, and collaboration. By refining language, integrating DEIB into daily operations, and building resilience, organizations can drive lasting change. Event Garde is here to help you navigate this work and keep the momentum going.
