EG: If you could learn one skill instantly, what would it be? Why?
JC: I would love to know how to use Adobe Illustrator overnight; I see so many organizations relying on one or two graphic designers for all their work. One delay or a retirement can impact so many, so it would be a great skill to have.
EG: What are some effective strategies you use for initiating conversations at networking events?
JC: While I refrain from employing most “ice breaker” techniques whenever I can, I do like to approach others and simply ask them how they are doing and actually wait for the answer. Not drop a “how are you,” and then walk away. But to ask and then provide follow-up questions. I’m a journalist by nature so it’s not hard for me to strike up conversations with strangers.
EG: What role do you think feedback and reflection should play in the workplace?
JC: I think these are very important tactics to utilize in the workplace because too often we’re rushing to get things done and we fail to see our victories and our losses from an event or from a particular educational offering. When properly used, feedback and reflection not only help you tweak future endeavors, they allow you to avoid possible roadblocks that you may have had difficulty recognizing at first glance.
EG: What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do that might surprise other people?
JC: I have always wanted to go skydiving. I have a silly fear of open-air heights, but I feel like this would help me overcome it. I like taking risks in my personal life, which is so different than my professional approach to business.
EG: What is a resource that has been valuable to you in your work, and what makes you appreciate it?
