Facilitation Methods & Strategic Planning
NORDP charts bold, inclusive path forward with strategic roadmap facilitated by Event Garde
Following the expiration of its first-ever strategic plan, NORDP was at a critical juncture. As a rapidly growing member-based association representing research development professionals, the organization needed a refreshed strategy that would build on prior progress while addressing persistent organizational challenges. Key areas of concern included decentralized governance, over-reliance on volunteers, inconsistent communication, and a lack of unified direction. NORDP sought a collaborative planning partner that could foster inclusive participation and translate collective vision into a clear, measurable, and sustainable strategic roadmap.
NORDP engaged Event Garde to design and facilitate a strategic planning process that prioritized inclusivity, transparency, and structured decision-making. Leveraging the Technology of Participation (ToP) methodology, Event Garde facilitated a six-phase process: virtual kickoff, a member-wide environmental assessment, in-depth data review and virtual stakeholder orientation, an in-person strategy retreat, and a series of virtual implementation workshops. Over 25 stakeholders—including board members, volunteers, and staff—collaborated to co-create a new plan for the next three to five years. The process surfaced a practical vision, underlying contradictions, and strategic directions, all culminating in a focused implementation roadmap with quarterly milestones, first-year accomplishments, and two-year success indicators.
As a result of its partnership with Event Garde, NORDP emerged with a cohesive strategic roadmap that aligned leadership, energized volunteers, and clarified priorities for the future. The member-informed vision focuses on professionalizing the research development workforce, embedding equity and inclusion, diversifying revenue, and optimizing governance structures. With strong internal ownership and a detailed action plan for the next year, NORDP is well-positioned to deliver on its mission to advance research development while strengthening the community that supports it.
