EG: What strategies have you found most effective when faced with learning a new subject or skill?

TV: I tend to learn best by grounding new information in real-world applications. When I’m faced with a new subject or skill, I start by understanding how it fits into the larger system—how it impacts timelines, stakeholders, and outcomes. From there, I break down the information into sections, write out any processes I need to make sure I remember, and give myself lots of grace as I’m learning. I’ve found that hands-on experience, paired with asking thoughtful questions of subject-matter experts, and thinking through how those experts might handle the situation or manage a task helps tremendously.

EG: What are some effective strategies you use for initiating conversations at networking events?

TV: This one can be difficult, especially for those that are uncomfortable in new environments. I try to approach networking with intention and curiosity. I view it as creating a new relationship within the industry. I usually start with simple, situational questions—why someone is attending or what they’re currently focused on—and let the conversation develop naturally. I’m less interested in transactional exchanges and more focused on understanding how people solve problems and where our experiences overlap. That mindset tends to create more meaningful, lasting professional connections.

EG: How do you keep track of best practices and industry trends?

TV: I stay current by combining formal learning with peer-driven insights. Industry events, webinars, and professional networks are invaluable, but just as important is what I learn through collaboration and post-project evaluation. I pay close attention to what improves efficiency, reduces risk, or strengthens outcomes, and I look for ways to standardize those practices so they can be applied consistently across future initiatives.

EG: Just for Fun - If you could have dinner with anyone, real or fictional, who would it be and what would you ask them?

TV: I would choose St. Joan of Arc. I would ask how she found the courage to lead with conviction in the face of doubt, opposition, and overwhelming pressure. Her clarity of purpose, moral courage, and willingness to act decisively even when the path was uncertain are qualities I deeply admire and strive to reflect in my own leadership and decision-making.
