Those of us in the learning industry often ask, “What’s the ROI on our efforts?”

If it’s sales training, ROI can often be measured by an increase in sales. If it’s leadership, sometimes ROI can be measured by the improved health of an organization.

But it’s often hard to pinpoint success to training and learning alone.

Perhaps looking at ROI a different way is a wise idea.

In a new paper by Harvard University and Rand Corp., researchers looked at ROI based on employee satisfaction. 

While paid time off took the No. 1 spot, training was at the top of priorities. So much so, that employees indicated they’d take a job that paid less if training opportunities were provided.

So, employers take note: Budget for training for 2019, if you haven’t already.


Many of us will attend work holiday parties, either with our own colleagues, those of our significant others or those of a friend.

While some of us my dread those conversations over cocktails and cookies, the holidays are prime for building networks.

A recent story in Fast Company says to choose holiday events wisely, and go in with a plan. For example, create a “meet list” of those with whom you want to connect.

“The holidays are a great time of year to canvas your network and connect individuals that you think could be helpful to each other in the New Year,” says Kevin Hamilton, SVP of marketing at the restaurant technology platform Toast. “This might include employees looking for a potential mentor, clients looking to break into a new region or colleagues who want to acquire new skills. Use your wide network for good, and connect people to one another in a way that’s helpful, authentic and meaningful.”


Employers know that millennials bring to the workplace a whole new set of expectations and desires. From working remotely to a healthy work-life balance, the professional landscape is changing.

But one thing hasn’t changed: Training is a valuable tool in the transfer of knowledge.

According to a recent story in Forbes, 44 percent of millennials say opportunities for continuous learning are key to choosing an employer.

“In addition to fostering an improved sense of employee engagement and value to the company, training programs assist with knowledge transfer,” Forbes says. “With 10,000 boomers reaching retirement age each day, training and education will be vital for a smooth generational transition.”
