As another busy conference season comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on one of the greatest joys of my work: the opportunity to partner with so many incredible clients doing meaningful, important work.
As an independent contractor within a consulting firm, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with associations across industries and service-based organizations such as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Each one brings a unique mission, culture, and community, and together, they’ve shaped not just the events I help plan, but also the professional I’ve become.
The Joy of Supporting Important Work
When people ask what I love most about event planning and facilitation, I rarely start by talking about logistics or timelines. Those are part of the craft, of course, but what truly brings me joy is knowing that the events I help create support organizations doing vital work for their members and communities.
These events aren’t just gatherings; they’re moments of connection, celebration, and learning. I’ve had the privilege of watching association members cheer for one another’s accomplishments, embrace colleagues they haven’t seen in years, and express deep pride in their shared professions. Those moments, small as they might seem, are the heartbeat of this work. They remind me that I’m not just planning programs; I’m helping to create spaces where people belong.
Learning and Growing Together
One of the unexpected gifts of working with such a variety of clients is how much I’ve learned along the way. Each project opens a new window into a different field or community, and often, I find myself walking away with a deeper understanding of issues I hadn’t fully appreciated before.
For example, through my work with organizations focused on gambling awareness, I’ve learned about the importance of responsible gambling education and the ripple effects it has on individuals, families, and communities. It’s broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for how events can serve as catalysts for learning, change, and shared purpose.
I’ve also grown as an event manager, constantly exploring new ways to enhance accessibility and inclusivity. From experimenting with technologies that support individuals with hearing loss to refining how information is presented and shared onsite, I’ve come to see that every innovation, no matter how small, can make a world of difference for attendees.
That’s the beauty of partnering with mission-driven organizations: we’re learning together. My clients challenge me to think differently, to adapt, and to keep improving. Not just for the success of an event, but for the people those events serve.
A Front-Row Seat to Inspiration
Over the years, I’ve been lucky to build lasting relationships with members and leaders across these organizations. Sitting in the room as they celebrate milestones, exchange ideas, and honor their colleagues is something I never take for granted.
There’s a special kind of energy that fills the air when people gather around a shared purpose. I’ve witnessed heartfelt stories, bursts of laughter, and quiet moments of gratitude that remind me why this work matters so much. It’s not about the scale of the event or the size of the budget; it’s about the sense of pride and connection that’s created when people come together.
Reflecting Forward
As I look back on this season, I’m struck by how much I’ve learned, not just about events, but about people, collaboration, and purpose. Working alongside clients who are driven to make a difference continually renews my sense of motivation and gratitude.
And as I look ahead to 2026, I can’t help but feel excited. I look forward to another year, for me and for Event Garde, as we continue to partner with organizations that inspire, challenge, and teach us. There’s always something new to learn, a new story to tell, and another opportunity to bring people together in meaningful ways.
Each event may only last a few days, but the impact lingers far beyond the closing session. For me, that’s where the true joy lies in knowing that our collective work helps make space for connection, celebration, and progress.
And as I wrap up this conference season with after-action-reviews, final hotel invoices, and other post-event tasks, I’m filled with gratitude for every client, colleague, and community that has allowed me to be part of their story. Here’s to continued learning, growth, and partnership in the year ahead.
