According to Thomas Chamorro-Premuzic, who recently wrote about learning for Harvard Business Review, jobs often hinder the ability to learn, instead focusing on high performance. 

But expanding skillsets is an important part of any career and workplaces should foster a learning environment, he says.

Employees who want to learn on the job can follow four easy tips to do so: Look for opportunities that offer learning potential; own the learning process by carving out time to learn; focus on jobs that offer opportunities to build upon weakness or offer new skills; and learn from others and seek mentors.

Network

LinkedIn is one of the most effective tools for jobseekers and employers. But a bad profile can undermine efforts, for both parties, to find the perfect match.

recent U.S. News & World Report storyhighlighted three of the most common LinkedIn profile pitfalls. 

First, having no photo is worse than having a bad photo. Photos can easily be taken on a mobile device.

Second, profiles shouldn’t contain extreme details. Instead, LinkedIn users should stick to what they do and the value they bring to an organization.

Last, don’t litter profiles with keywords. 

Transfer

Talent development professionals are key to fostering knowledge transfer, according to a recent blog postby Association for Talent Development.

Some strategies include:

  • Encouraging managers and employees to develop their own knowledge plans. 
  • Sending employees to conferences and programs about knowledge transfer, and then having them share what they learned.
  • Create and share a formal knowledge transfer program.
  • Make knowledge transfer a priority by developing succession plans for each employee.

ATD says knowledge transfer can occur through job aids, coaching, storytelling, and collaborative learning spaces.
